The John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values welcomes Jessica Nickrand to its team. She has been hired as Assistant Director for Research for a one-year term.
Jessica Nickrand is a PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota in the History of Science program. Her research concentrates on history of medicine and public health in the United States. Her dissertation is on urban health care at the Detroit Medical Center from 1962-1993 asking how a changing manufacturing city responded to the racial and economic shifts of its population by examining the hospital construction that was planned as a replacement for the city’s dying manufacturing industry. Jessica is well-versed on current political and policy topics involving science, technology, medicine, and the environment as well as issues of equity and justice. She recently had an article published in The Atlantic on the potential impacts of Minneapolis’s changing racial demographics.
Jessica Nickrand has extensive grant writing and project management skills. She recently completed a 12-week fellowship in Washington D.C., the Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship with the National Academies of Sciences.
