New GLOBES supported research by Richard Marcantonio

Author: Carolina Perez

With the support of the GLOBES program Mini-Grants Research Awards, Drew has been conducting field
work in Sierra Leone. Over the past three years he has collected environmental and social data tracking
the effects of mining happening along the Pampana River watershed. Understanding what
environmental changes and subsequent human health risks are occurring, and what the impacts on
communities in the surrounding area are, is critical to effective environmental regulation and decision
making. In partnership with the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone and several Sierra Leonean
government agencies, Drew has been mapping and measuring these changes to help bring about more
equitable and just environmental management solutions.
