Biography

Dr. Carpenter is a clinical psychologist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame. He uses technology and intensively longitudinal methods like ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to better understand how everyday people behave in their everyday lives. His research focuses in particular on substance use and how substance use disorder manifests in daily life and he is interested in how people use substances to address aversive experiences, like physical pain, insomnia, fatigue, and negative affect. His work also examines the effectiveness and feasibility of mobile health (mHealth) interventions to address and prevent substance use in daily life.
