The Reilly Center is delighted to announce that Gary Lamberti, Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the Stream and Wetland Ecology Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, has agreed to serve as the Interim Director of the GLOBES Program in Environment and Society for 2015-16.
Lamberti's research interests include identifying and remediating human impacts on aquatic ecosystems, the ecology of native and introduced Pacific salmon, and the role of climate change and invasive species in wetland function, focused in the Pacific Northwest and in the Great Lakes basin. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and past-President of the Society for Freshwater Science, the leading international society for river ecologists. Gary has over 175 publications dealing with various aspects of aquatic ecology and has edited the volume Methods in Stream Ecology (Elsevier). We are grateful to have Gary's experience and leadership this year in GLOBES.
The GLOBES program began in 2005 with the support of an Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). IGERT is the NSF's flagship interdisciplinary training program, educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers by building on the foundations of their disciplinary knowledge with interdisciplinary training. GLOBES now offers a Certificate in Environment and Society to Notre Dame students enrolled in doctoral degree programs.
His appointment follows the departure of Dr. Jessica Hellmann, who has accepted a position as the Director of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota.
