This presentation offers a unique perspective on the power of graphic medicine as Joan Reilly shares insights from her current work. Her graphic memoir transcends the personal narrative of navigating a significant health challenge to explore broader psychological and sociological themes through the accessible and engaging medium of comics. This compelling project delves into unexpected and thought-provoking territories, examining the human response to unusual and unsettling situations within healthcare environments, offering a powerful lens on patient experience and the social dynamics of medical spaces. We invite you to discover how Reilly utilizes the visual and narrative tools of graphic storytelling to illuminate the complexities of the healthcare journey and foster deeper understanding and empathy.

The John J. Reilly Center is delighted to welcome Joan Reilly as one of this year's Storozynski Writers in Residence. This fellowship, a collaboration between the Health, Humanities, and Society (HHS) program and Creative Writing, supports emerging writers whose work thoughtfully engages with themes of physical and mental illness, healthcare, disability, and the body – areas deeply resonant with Reilly's current graphic memoir project.
