“GLOBES is working hard to bring together scholars in the sciences, engineering, and humanities to tackle the grand challenges facing our planet,” said Jessica Hellmann, GLOBES Director and Associate Professor of Biological Sciences. “The GLOBES Certificate in Environment & Society trains students to become effective communicators and engage with the media, with policy-makers and the public. GLOBES students learn to take their science to the front lines.”
Interdisciplinary scholarship is another component of GLOBES training. Students take coursework and seek out a faculty advisor from outside their primary discipline. The program facilitates faculty connections and provides mini-grant funding to support interdisciplinary research by certificate students.
Peter Burns, ND Energy Director and the Henry J. Massman Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, added that GLOBES offers student researchers a unique opportunity to broaden a PhD program of study. “More science and engineering students today are showing interest in policy-related positions. The GLOBES training exposes them to important skill sets and experiences that open up a number of career options in and outside of academia.”
The GLOBES Certificate in Environment and Society program is housed in the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values. The program is governed by an Executive Committee consisting of faculty members from the College of Arts & Letters, College of Engineering, the College of Science, and the Law School.
