AWIS-ND Women in Science Conference

Location: Jordan Hall of Science and Hilton Garden Inn/Inn at St. Mary's

The Reilly Center is please to cosponsor the inaugural AWIS conference at Notre Dame.

With an increase of graduating PhD students and a declining academic job market, current PhD students face a more challenging process of locating a position within their field. Women especially have a hard time expanding their career in STEM. The Association for Women in Science, Notre Dame Chapter’s (AWIS-ND) vison in hosting the first ever RegionalWomen in Science conference is to provide the career development and networking opportunitiesfor female graduate students to succeed.

On September 30th and October 1st, AWIS-ND will host the first ever Regional Women in Science Conference. This networking and professional development conference is held for graduate students by graduate students to improve key professional skills. Those attending the conference may present research and attend workshops as well as network with other graduate students and well-established professionals. Specifically, students will showcase their research through poster and oral presentations. In addition, the morning workshops target all stages of a graduate students career from learning to be a more effective mentor through ethics to knowing how to negotiate your salary. In the afternoon, faculty and guest speakers will lead themed lunch discussions, including one on Science Policy, as well as review resumes.

In continuing the career development offemale, graduate student careers as well as encouraging regional and national relationships, the Women in Science Conference will reoccur every two years at different locations within the region. Furthermore, to reach and provide information effectively, we created a conference website (awis.nd.edu/wsc) that is responsive and mobile friendly.
